Somatosensory Association Cortex – Brodmann Areas 5 and 7 – A Brief Literature Overview

This is a brief literature review of the Somatosensory Association Cortex (SAC) which corresponds to Brodmann Areas 5 and 7. There is evidence that the SAC is activated by unimodal and not multimodal sensory stimulation.  The SAC is considered not as an area with unitary function but as an area with at least two functional subdivisions. A number of research areas have looked at the involvement of the SAC in speech and language. Speech is considered in some models to be a somatosensory activity and so studies have looked at activation of the speech articulators in conjunction with activity in the SAC. One paper (freely available here) associated a reduction in SAC activity in response to speaking. The SAC is differentially activated in response to speaking first or second languages . Deep Brain Stimulation in the Subthalamic Nucleus is one treatment approach in Parkinson’s Disease which can modify the motor symptoms. In one study this was associated with an increase in cerebral blood flow in the SAC.  Limb movements and SAC activity have also been investigated as in this study. There have been a number of case reports looking at tactile agnosia (an inability to identity objects by touch) in association with lesions in the SAC (see here and here). Thus the SAC is associated with speech and language as well as agnosia and appears to be activated by simple rather than complex sensory stimuli according to one study.
