ICD-10

ICD-10 is the current version of the International Classification of Diseases and represents the 10th revision of Bertillon’s original classification.

The historical context of the 10th revision is referenced in this article at the WHO website. The 10th revision was expected to be a fundamental revision and it was realised that to facilitate assessment and collaboration, a generous length of time between revisions was merited.  The Conference for the 10th revision was delayed until 1989 and was endorsed by the World Health Assembly in 1990.

There is a large amount of material on ICD-10 at the WHO website. This includes a self-directed learning tool, the instruction manual and an online browser based version of ICD-10. There are also details of the previous versions of the online version of ICD-10.

Due to the international status of ICD-10 it has become the starting point for many important discussions – about morbidity and mortality classifications in general, about interoperability and also the use of SNOMED-CT®.
