The Brain Hypometabolism Hypothesis: Part 2

The ‘Brain Hypometabolism Hypothesis’ simply stated is that ‘Brain hypometabolism leads to neuropathology’. The hypothesis is more nuanced. In their 2016 paper, Cunnane and colleagues outline several supporting lines of evidence as the basis for their paper

(i) Lower glucose uptake in the frontal cortex of older adults

(ii) Regional deficits in brain glucose uptake in younger adults at risk of Alzheimer’s Type Dementia

(iii) Preservation of ketone uptake in the brain

(iv) Further evidence on consequences of ketone based interventions.

Special Concepts in SNOMED CT®

In this series of posts I am assessing SNOMED CT® using the international browser. The section on special concepts is divided broadly into two categories. The first looks like metadata as the terms describe categories of concepts. The second category is a heterogenous group that includes but is not limited to abnormal results of investigations, iatrogenic injuries and also self-injury. This latter category looks to be useful for algorithms which update relevant sections of the records. A text analysis algorithm may be useful for supporting clinicians with the use of this terminology
