The Brain Hypometabolism Hypothesis Part 21: Glucose as a Signalling Molecule


Professors Bernard Thorens and Mike Mueckler have written a 2010 review titled ‘Glucose Transporters in the 21st Century‘.

In their paper they note that Glucose not just a source of energy but is also a signalling molecule. Thus they state that Glucose influences various processes including

(a) The activity of neurons that regulate Glucose (e.g. see this paper)

(b) Gene transcription

(c) Enzyme activity
