Revising the Three Structure Model: Integration in Neuroscience: A Core Problem – Part 9

Slide1

In this post I propose a small amendment to the three structure model which clarifies more clearly the relationship of neural activity to unconscious and conscious activity. Although speech is the direct result of neural activity, the model states that language results from consciousness and highlights the nature of language as a product of the mind. If we consider this model as a starting point for further exploration we can see that it leads naturally to other questions. Can language ever arise from transient unconscious activity or absolute unconscious activity? We can also consider the impact of language on the structures of consciousness and unconscious activity.

A Three Structure Model of Neural Activity in Relation to Consciousness and Language

It is worth pointing out that models of the mind tend to be divided into two broad categories. The first is a dualistic model which states that mind and brain are separate entities and Descartes is particularly noted for his development of this model. The second is the physicalist model which states that mind results from brain activity. The three structure model falls into the latter category of physicalism.
