Cunnane and colleagues have published a paper on brain metabolism in aging. Using PET they investigated glucose and ketone uptake with the radioactive tracers 18F-FDG (upper panel) and 11carbon-acetoacetate (11C-AcAc; lower panel) respectively. The results are shown in Figure 2. They found a 9% reduction in whole brain glucose uptake in their older adult group (average age 71) compared to the younger adult group (average age 26).
