The NHS Number

There is an NHS interoperability handbook here. Appendix A features a table which maps current standards to the interoperability framework layers. One of the standards that map onto the interoperability framework is the NHS number.

There is more information on the NHS number on this archived National Information Board webpage. The NHS number is 10 digits with the last digit being used as a check which enables the use of algorithms in healthcare software to check the integrity of NHS numbers in the database.
